Defence School Mentor Program
Supporting Defence student and families
The Defence School Mentor (DSM) supports Defence students and their families from Year 7 to Year 10. The DSM works with the Wellbeing team and teaching staff to support the educational and emotional needs of all Defence students.
The DSM provides Defence students and families with a range of programs and support services including:
- Welcoming students and their families to our school and supporting them during parental absences due to deployment, exercises or courses
- Excursions to various locations including Birrigai outdoor and environmental education centre, the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Australian War Memorial. These excursions are often combined with other ACT schools providing opportunities for Defence students to socialise across the broader Canberra Defence community whilst encouraging leadership, initiative and team work.
- Liaising with the teaching staff and Wellbeing team to monitor the social, emotional and academic wellbeing of Defence students
- Informing Defence families of social events within the region
- Assisting in the coordination of Anzac Day and Remembrance Day ceremonies and organising opportunities for students to represent the school at external ceremonies at the Australian War Memorial, and
- Identify programs, services, resources or opportunities that best suit their needs.
